Bon Appetit

My photo taken of Sarah Blecher’s Gingerbread doughnuts has been displayed prominently on the Bon Appetit front page for the past couple of days. Don’t know how long it will be there, but still pretty cool to see.
Vote for Sarah’s Gingerbread Doughnuts with Maple Cream Cheese frosting under the Miscellaneous Dessert category.

Gingerbread donuts

A small personal shoot done for Sarah Blecher of the Culinary School of the Rockies who was submitting her Gingerbread donuts with maple cream cheese frosting recipe for a Bon Appetit blog contest.

Jason and Andrea wedding

20091024_AndreaandJasonWedding_blog - Images by Trent Davol
Andrea and Jason were a dream to work with and so were their families and friends. Despite having our portrait plans thwarted by the weather, they rallied to make sure we got the portraits back at the hotel. It wasn’t the perfect setup, but when you’re thrown a curveball in [...]

Expensive cameras + water submersion = no more camera

Went out fishing with a friend on Saturday. Took along my camera in hopes of getting some nice photos with the fall light and colors. We had decided to fish South Boulder Creek below Gross Reservoir. We had fished it a couple of weeks before and it was a really nice stretch of river. Unfortunately [...]

Culinary School of the Rockies, Alumni Portraits

I was recently hired to shoot alumni portraits for the Culinary School of the Rockies. I shot six alumni in all, these are three of my favorites.

Big Tall Dave

An old friend of mine from Jackson suffered a terrible biking accident on Sunday, July 27. He was taken to the intensive care unit in Idaho Falls where he was put into a medical coma. He’s been making slow but steady progress, even saying a few words yesterday and trying hard to open up his [...]

Family Portraits

Dorian Family Portraits - Blog - Images by Trent Davol
I met Dorian through the Culinary School of the Rockies where she works as an admissions specialist. She had seen some photos I took of our friend’s son Oliver and I think the idea of doing something a little different struck a chord with her. [...]

Smokeproof Letterpress

Yesterday I had the pleasure of hanging out with Brad O’Sullivan, i.e. Smookeproof Press.
Ever since I saw Brad’s letterpress operation I’ve wanted to make a short video about it. Yesterday I shot some footage, shot some stills, going back today to wrap it up.
Letterpress is truly a craft. I don’t think that what I captured [...]

Rapids

My nice big “sports” lens (300 f/2.8) is still in repair, been there since January. Unbelievable.
So I rented a lens in order to be able to shoot this weekend’s Rapids game.
To save a few bucks I went with an older and slower but still autofocus lens. I think 99% of what I shot [...]

Can I justify a $30,000 camera?

I had the chance to take a handful of shots with a Phase One digital back on a Hasselblad H Series camera and macro lens.
It was during a workshop sponsored by a rental house. The setup was simple - some flowers under a big softbox. I threw in my card so I could take some [...]

More of this kid…

I wonder how much “camera in his face” moments Oliver will retain later in life.

Rugby

I was out shooting youth soccer on Saturday and was getting ready to leave the fields when I happened upon a rugby game. Since I had never shot rugby before I stopped to see what I could get. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched rugby and still the sport baffles me. Probably how [...]

Then and Now

I think it was close to a couple of years ago that I got my hands on a Hasselblad for the first time and took it down to Shawn and Liz’s and shot some photos of Oliver and Liz hanging out in the living room that was being painted at the time.

My mother, the rising photography star

My mother has been an avid photographer for several years and for about the last two I’ve encouraged her to give up her little Kodak point-n-shoot with it’s terrible lag time and poor image quality in low light.
This Christmas my Dad bought her the Nikon D90. It was quite a step up and I think [...]

Three Chefs

Working off of a theme inspired by a recent NY Times article and accompanying photo, the Culinary School of the Rockies asked me to help with a photoshoot for an upcoming mailing they have planned.

Carrie and Ben

Our friends Carrie and Ben got married last month. Actually, they’ve been officially married since this summer but they wanted to make it official with a ceremony that included their friends and family. They asked me to take photos during the wedding and I convinced them to also do some portraits at Chautauqua which is [...]

Barn Raising

At the end of January we were invited to Todd Hoven’s birthday/barn raising party. Todd and his wife Jessica and their two children had told us they had bought a house and a lot of land “just east of Fort Collins” and it was pretty cheap. I don’t remember what the acreage was exactly but [...]
